Major General Felix Busozoori, the UPDF Fourth Division Infantry Commander, has backed the deployment of UPDF soldiers in South Sudan saying securing peace in the war torn country is in Uganda’s best interest considering the high number of refugees and other related challenges that come with insecurity.
Speaking during the recent pass out of EX-LRA combatants who completed skilled training, Maj. Gen. Busozoori, said if South Sudan is secure, Uganda will reap a lot in terms of peace, security and trade.
Early this year, Uganda deployed Special Forces in South Sudan as fears grow that the country could descend into civil war.
This was after tension between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar were spiralling as a power-sharing deal unravels, and clashes have erupted.
The pair signed a peace deal to bring a five-year civil war to an end in 2018.
Dozens of soldiers and a general were killed in the northern town of Nasir amid clashes between the South Sudanese army and the White Army militia, which Kiir has linked to Machar.
