Police in Arua on Wednesday arrested 32 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters accused of vandalism during the presidential campaigns of the party presidential candidate Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi in Arua city.

The suspects, currently detained at Arua Central Division Police Station, were apprehended for allegedly pelting stones at police officers and damaging the windscreens of four police vehicles with registration numbers UP 03271, UP 03346, UP 00173, and UP 7697.

According to West Nile Region Police Spokesperson Josephine Angucia, chaos began when Kyagulanyi was stopped from accessing the city centre via a route that had not been authorised by the security committee.

Angucia explained that Kyagulanyi then jumped onto a boda boda, concealed his face with a helmet, and rode on a numberless motorcycle through the city to the NUP offices in Oli Central Division. Upon arrival, he climbed onto an unfinished building to briefly address supporters.

From there, he reportedly proceeded with a large and rowdy crowd via Rhino Camp Road to Inzikuru Stadium, Barifa, the designated rally venue.

The situation escalated when some supporters allegedly pelted stones at police vehicles, damaging at least four police vehicles.

Angucia noted that the arrested individuals were identified through CCTV footage capturing them in the act adding that no injuries were reported during the incident.
