The Territorial Police in Lira District are investigating a shocking case of mob justice that has left a student of Lira University dead.

The incident, reported early on the morning of December 3rd, occurred in Ayito Village in Awiodyek Sub-county.

According to preliminary police findings, two men were discovered by the roadside along Corner Amach–Amach Town Council route.

One was already dead, while the other was found unconscious and in critical condition.

Both victims had ropes tied around them, each with a dead chicken attached—an indication, police say, of suspected mob action.

The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Ongom Emmanuel, a student at Lira University and resident of Kakoge B Cell in Lira City West Division.

The survivor is Otim Makey, a nurse at Good Choice Clinic, who is currently receiving treatment at Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

The case was initially reported by Corporal Okabo Julus of Majan Police Post. A joint team of investigators from the District CID, Homicide, Canine Unit, and uniformed officers visited the crime scene, which was thoroughly documented.

Officers hope the surviving victim will help identify the attackers once his condition improves while the body of the deceased has been taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.

According to police, after documenting the scene, a trained police dog was deployed to help track suspects.

The dog picked up a scent from the crime scene and led investigators through nearby footpaths and homesteads. This trail resulted in the arrest of one man, identified as Otiti David, who is currently assisting detectives with further inquiries.

North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, confirmed the reports and hailed the canine unit’s swift response, saying it played a crucial role in narrowing down the investigation.

He added that while key suspects are still on the run, the arrest provides critical leads as intelligence teams continue their hunt.

The public is urged to support the ongoing investigation and refrain from acts of mob justice, which police warn undermine the rule of law and endanger innocent lives
