The Diocese of Kitgum has dismissed speculation circulating on social media and within local communities that the grave of St Janani Luwum is to be relocated, saying no such plan exists and urging the public to ignore the claims.

In a letter dated December 22, the Kitgum Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Willy Olango, said the diocese had noted “with pain and concern” reports alleging that the body of St Janani Luwum would be exhumed and transferred to Kampala.

St Janani Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-Zaire, was killed in 1977 during the regime of former president Idi Amin.

His grave in Kitgum District remains a site of national and spiritual significance, attracting pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond, especially during annual commemorations.

The diocese said the grave remains under the stewardship of the Church and will continue to be preserved at its current location in accordance with Anglican tradition and historical practice.
