President Yoweri Museveni has agreed to procure bicycles for the 4, 315 local council1 chairpersons in Acholi sub region worth over UGX 2 billion.
The development followed a request made to the president on Friday by the Speaker of Parliament Anita Anet Among from Gulu Core PTC during a meeting with the NRM party structure leaders.
According to Among, the bicycles distributed to the LC1’s in 2021/2022 financial year have become old while others are broken down thus affecting mobilization and monitoring of service delivery in the community.
In response Museveni accepted to procure new bicycles for all the LC1’s in Acholi Sub region to ease their movement in mobilization of the citizens and monitoring of government programs.
Museveni stress that bicycles are not only good for transport but will enable the local leaders to be physically fit since it’s one of the best mode for doing exercise which will help to boost their health.
Museveni also promised to procure motorcycles for all the local council three chairpersons in Acholi who are operating without motorcycles.
The government, through the Ministry of Local Government, in 2021/2022 financial year distributed bicycles to all the LC1’s and LC2’s across the country.
The bicycles are considered government property and are intended to help local leaders monitor government programs and mobilize citizens.
