Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate, General Mugisha Muntu, has joined other opposition leaders in rejecting the outcome of the 2026 general elections, citing the shockingly low voter turnout—the lowest in Uganda’s electoral history.

The 2026 elections, which declared President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the winner, were marked by unprecedented voter apathy.

More than 10 million registered voters did not cast a presidential ballot, signalling a deep level of civic withdrawal.

Speaking to journalists at the ANT party offices in Bukoto, Muntu, who finished fourth with 59,276 votes, representing 0.53 percent of the total vote, questioned the conduct of polling day activities, the tallying process, and the declaration of results by the Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, arguing that these shortcomings undermine the credibility of the election.

According to ANT, the party plans to collaborate with researchers and universities to better understand the root causes of voter apathy and hopelessness, to restore confidence, and build a politically conscious population.

Muntu said the party would not rush to court to challenge the election results, citing limited capacity to collect sufficient evidence of irregularities.

He explained that ANT lacked polling agents at many stations, making it difficult to gather declaration forms needed to mount a credible legal challenge.
