Lightning has left one teacher dead and injured 16 Pupils of Global View Primary in Kamdini, Oyam District with serious injuries.
The incident happened on Tuesday night during a heavy downpour, accompanied by hailstorms.
The deceased, who has been identified only as Joseph, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at St. John the XXIII Hospital, commonly known as Atapara Hospital, where his remains are being kept, while the other, Jimmy Otim, is still receiving medical care at the same facility.
The 16 pupils were rushed to Diicunyi Health Centre III. Particulars of the 16 are yet to be obtained.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying Police officers from Kamdini responded promptly to the incident point.
For the last five years, Acholi and Lango sub-regions have been experiencing numerous cases of lightning strikes that have killed over 40 people and left dozens with life changing injuries.
Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) have blamed the rampant cases of lightning strikes being reported in Acholi Sub region on the changing climate and rampant destruction of forest cover which has made the region prone.
