Gulu Regional Referral Hospital in Gulu City is set to start distributing toilet paper in patient toilets and wards in a bid to end frequent toilet clogging caused by patients and caretakers flushing inappropriate items.

Speaking to journalists, Walter Uryek-Wun, the Principal Hospital Administrator at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, said the hospital is grappling with severe clogging of flush toilets.

He noted that instead of toilet paper, some patients and caretakers are using clothes, stones, maize cobs, and other hard objects that get stuck in the toilet’s curved trapway or the main sewer pipe leading to flooding on the toilet floors.

Uryek-Wun said the new plan will see toilet paper made available in wards to encourage proper use and reduce the cost and disruption of repairing blocked toilets. The public has been urged to use the facilities responsibly.

The hospital management hopes the measure will improve hygiene and keep sanitation facilities functioning for patients and staff.
