Grief has engulfed residents of Latoro Central village in Got Apwoyo sub- County, Nwoya District, after a stray elephant from the Murchison Falls National Park trampled a 34-year-old farmer to death on Tuesday morning.

The lifeless body of Opiyo Innocent was discovered in the garden by his relatives after being trampled to death by an elephant.

According to Ben Latim Openy, the LC III Chairperson Got Apwoyo Sub-County, Opiyo had reportedly gone to guard his groundnut garden at night but unfortunately, he was attacked by a marauding elephant.

Nwoya district experiences high human-wildlife conflict due to its borders with Murchison Falls National Park, leading to multiple fatal elephant tramping incidents.

In August 2025 two women, Scovia Ayiyorwoth (26) and Doreen Akumu (46), were trampled to death in Obira Parish while returning home with firewood.

In November 2024 Opio Robbin, a 52-year-old farmer in Langele Village, Lii Sub-county, was killed at night while attempting to drive away a herd of elephants destroying his crops.

In September 2024, a22-year-old man was attacked and trampled early in the morning while weeding soybeans in his garden in Ceke Village, Lii Sub-county.

Uganda’s wildlife compensation scheme provides financial payouts to victims of human-wildlife conflict. Compensation is provided for injuries, human deaths, and livestock depredation caused by protected wild animals.
