Amuru District has received medical supplies worth UGX 11 million to strengthen the fight against Ebola in the district, thanks to Direct Aid Society, a non-governmental organization operating in Uganda supporting sustainable development, disaster relief, and support for vulnerable communities.
The donation includes assorted medicines, protective gear, community sensitization materials, logistics support, and handwashing facilities.
The supplies were officially received by Amuru Resident District Commissioner Geoffrey Orsbon Oceng, who also doubles as Chairperson District Ebola Taskforce.
Speaking shortly after receiving the donation, Oceng thanked the organization for the timely support, noting that many health workers in the district have been operating without adequate protective equipment and essential supplies needed to prevent the spread of Ebola.
Dr Hamza Makumbi, the Health Care and Relief Officer at Direct Aid Society, said the donation is intended to support the government’s efforts to combat Ebola and strengthen preparedness measures in communities at risk.
According to the Ministry of Health, Uganda has recorded a cumulative total of 20 confirmed cases of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, including 15 imported cases and five secondary transmissions.
The outbreak has resulted in two deaths and 15 recoveries, with most cases linked to individuals crossing from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in search of medical care.
