Police in Amuru District have intensified investigations into the burning of a sugarcane plantation belonging to Amuru Sugar Works Ltd by unknown people.
The incident occurred on July 19th at around 2 a.m. in Akee Village, Kololo Parish, Lakang Sub-county.
According to police, a report was filed by Omwony Patrick, the coordinator of Amuru Sugar Works Limited, who alleged that unknown persons maliciously set fire to approximately one hectare of the company’s sugarcane plantation.
A team of detectives led by the District Scene of Crime Officer visited the scene and found plantation workers had managed to contain the fire using fire extinguishers, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring plantations.
The Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Ongom David Mudong confirmed the report and said investigations are ongoing to establish the people behind the act and their motive.
According to Police, no arrests have so far been made, but police say clues are being gathered to identify, arrest and prosecute the suspects.
This is not the first time such incident is happening to such a project in Amuru
Atiak Sugar Plantation in Amuru District have in the past frequently suffered devastated fire attacks destroying thousands of acres of sugarcanes.
