The Uganda Land Commission has begun the process of verifying and documenting all government land in Gulu City in a bid to strengthen land governance and protect public land from encroachment and fraud.
The Commission today, Tuesday, July 21st held a comprehensive land inventory meeting with Gulu City leaders, technical staff and other stakeholders at the Gulu Board room to set plans to kick-start the exercise.
Ronnie Bahungule, the Senior Land Officer at the Uganda Land Commission, said the exercise is a government initiative and will be conducted in collaboration with the Gulu City Land Board and city leadership to ensure all government land is properly registered, verified and documented.
Bahungule said that the exercise will help protect government land from encroachment, double allocation and fraud, while also improving revenue collection and planning.
The Gulu City Mayor, Acire Julius Labeja, while speaking to journalists said, as Gulu City, they have welcomed the initiative, saying it will benefit the city, over the years faced challenges related to boundary disputes, poor governance, poor documentation and the commission is coming in to set boundaries, and register these land and properties owned by the Government.
The exercise will cover different categories of government land, including institutional land, public utility land, protected areas and corridors reserved for roads, power lines and other infrastructure.
