Gulu City on Saturday joined the rest of Uganda in observing the mandatory National Cleaning Days, aimed at promoting cleanliness, sanitation, unity, and responsible citizenship across the country.
The National Cleaning Day takes place on the last Saturday of every month from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. During the three-hour exercise, non-essential movement, vehicles, and business operations are restricted nationwide to allow citizens to participate in community sanitation activities.
The exercise in Gulu City was launched by City Council officials, led by Mayor Acire Julius Labeja, the Resident City Commissioner, and other city leaders, who joined residents and other stakeholders in cleaning public spaces, roadsides, drainage channels, markets and other areas within the city.
Speaking to Mega FM after the cleaning exercise, Odoch Bosco Olak, the Principal Presidential Coordinator in charge of Greater Northern Uganda, said the initiative will help improve cleanliness in Gulu City and across Northern Uganda.
Odoch said the exercise will encourage residents to take responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings, while also promoting unity and respect for the country as Ugandans come together to serve their communities.
The National Cleaning Day was introduced by the government as a nationwide community sanitation initiative to address poor hygiene and sanitation, promote environmental cleanliness, and encourage collective responsibility among citizens.
The exercise is coordinated under the Office of the Prime Minister and is conducted across the country every last Saturday of the month, with all citizens expected to participate in cleaning their communities
