Police in the North Kyoga Region have uncovered a suspected scheme in which some Spiro electric motorcycles are allegedly being given duplicate registration numbers to defeat security and tracking systems.
The discovery was made during intelligence-led operations targeting urban crime and traffic violations, where officers intercepted two pairs of Spiro motorcycles carrying the same registration numbers—UMA 089GJ and UMA 175FK.
The operators of the motorcycles were arrested to assist police investigations.
According to North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the duplicated numbers are suspected to be part of a wider scheme designed to make it difficult for law enforcement to identify and track motorcycles, while also helping some operators bypass Spiro’s official battery subscription monitoring system.
Police have also discovered suspected illegal battery charging and swapping points operating outside officially authorised Spiro facilities.
Investigators suspect that the unauthorised battery centres could be linked to the use of duplicated registration numbers, allowing some motorcycles to operate outside the approved system while concealing their identity.
Police are now working to establish how the registration numbers were forged, who is behind the suspected scheme and whether the activities form part of a wider criminal network.
