Gulu City Council Education department has finally earmarked Laroo Primary School, a learning institution for children with hearing impairments and other disabilities, for a major rehabilitation after years of neglect.
The decision follows pressure on Gulu City Council and education stakeholders from media houses and disability rights advocates, who highlighted the school’s deteriorating condition.
Laroo Primary School, which has an enrolment of 266 learners with disabilities, including autism, hearing impairments and physical disabilities, has been operating in buildings that are on the verge of collapsing.
Peter Banya, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Laroo-Pece Division, said no new school projects will be undertaken in the division until Laroo Primary School is rehabilitated.
Innocent Ahimbisibwe, the Gulu City Council Town Clerk, confirmed the report saying the school has been earmarked for a comprehensive rehabilitation this financial year.
Ahimbisibwe added that the planned rehabilitation will improve classrooms, sanitation facilities and other essential infrastructure to ensure learners with disabilities receive quality education in a safe and accessible environment.
