At least 3,646 people have died from various health complications after being admitted to different health facilities across the Acholi Sub region, according to a report presented during the 6th Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Health Assembly for Acholi sub region.
The report indicates that 245,808 patients were admitted with various health conditions between June 2025 to June 2026.
St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor recorded the highest number of deaths at 1,296, followed by Kitgum General Hospital with 551 deaths.
Dr Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo recorded 217 deaths, while Anaka General Hospital recorded 88 deaths.
Gulu Military Hospital recorded 78 deaths, followed by St Joseph Hospital Kitgum with 69 and Yot Kom Hospital Kitgum with 66 deaths.
Ayiko International Hospital recorded nine deaths, while Gulu Independent Hospital recorded three deaths.
Dr Peter Mukobi, the Director of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, attributed the high number of deaths partly to late referral of critically ill patients by relatives and poor health-seeking behaviour. Dr Mukobi said most of the deaths were associated to malaria and respiratory conditions.
