Fish vendors in Gulu City are set to benefit from improved fish preservation following a commitment by Yalelo Uganda, an aquaculture company known for raising fresh tilapia in the open waters of Lake Victoria and supplying fresh fish to different markets, to introduce an ice making machine in the city to help keep fish fresh and address concerns over quality.
The commitment follows complaints raised by customers during recent market riots in Gulu City, with concerns reportedly centering on fish hygiene, freshness and pricing.
Yalelo Uganda has since trained more than 40 fish vendors in Gulu City in proper fish handling, hygiene, storage and preservation as part of efforts to improve the quality of fish sold to consumers.
Speaking to Mega FM, Yalelo Uganda’s Gulu Branch Manager, Bernard Oroma, said the training was intended to help vendors address the concerns raised by customers and improve their fish-handling practices.
To support the implementation of the training, Yalelo donated 20 cooler boxes, each with a capacity of 105 litres, alongside fish-handling gloves and aprons.
The intervention is also expected to support vendors in protecting their businesses by improving hygiene standards and maintaining the quality of their products.
