At least 12 students from Acholi sub region have been admitted to Gulu University this academic year under the district quota system.
The quota system was introduced by government to address the imbalances in admitting students on the basis of the general performance countrywide. The beneficiaries of the scheme are selected depending on the districts where they sat A-level examinations.
Also, district quota scholarship was meant to help bright but financially disadvantaged students to access university education.
Every year, government reserves 75 per cent of 4,000 government scholarships for the merit scheme. The remaining balance of 25% that constitutes 1,000 slots is 896 students under the district quota.
Out of the 12 students, Pader district secured three slots, Gulu (1), Lamwo (3), Nwoya (1), Kitgum (2) and Amuru (2). Meanwhile Omoro and Agago districts did not send any student under the district quota system.
