President Museveni Mourns Kiteezi Landfill Victims

The Uganda Police confirmed the retrieval of 21 bodies from the collapsed landfill in Kiteezi, Kampala on Sunday evening, as rescue operations continue.

President Yoweri Museveni addressed the tragedy on his X account (formerly Twitter), directing the State House Comptroller to provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased, offering five million Shillings per person, and one million Shillings to those injured.

President Yoweri Museveni has also ordered an investigation into how people had been allowed to live so close to the “potentially hazardous and dangerous heap”, and ordered the removal of those in what he called the “danger zone”.

The investigation into the cause of the collapse is being led by the Deputy Inspector General of Government, Anne Muhairwe.

The President has conveyed his condolences to the families of the People who died on Friday night after as a consequence of part of the rubbish heap at Kiteezi, peeling off and burying People who were living nearby.

The 36-acre (14-hectare) Kiteezi landfill is the only one serving the whole of Kampala, a city home to an estimated four million people.

Mr Onyango said that some 1,000 people had been forced to leave their homes because of the landslide.
