Flash floods have submerged parts of Elegu Town Council in Amuru District, displacing more than 2,000 residents, amid cholera outbreak.
The floods hit the border town at around 5:00 am after River Unyama burst its banks following the continued torrential rains being experienced in the region.
The most affected villages include Kaladima, Lorikwo East, Bibia Village and parts of Lorikwo West village.
The flood has equally affected businesses with Elegu market and a number of shops submerged causing huge losses to the business community.
This comes at a time when the area has been hit with cholera which has so far infected 196 people including five deaths.
Mathias Kisembo, the Town Clerk Elegu Town Council, said his office is in touch with the district disaster management committee to find ways of evacuating the affected residents to a safe place.
Dr Okello Alfred, the Amuru District Health Officer, warned that floods might affect the district’s efforts in containing cholera outbreak.
In 2016, the Department of Relief Disaster Preparedness and Management in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) profiled Amuru including Elegu as one of the most dangerous and flood prone areas in the country.
