Aber Gifter, Mayor Elect

By Christopher Oola

Aber Gifter, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate, has written history after becoming the first woman to win the Laroo-Pece division mayoral race in Gulu city in an election marred by voter apathy.

Aber pulled 8,081 votes, beating two other men including the incumbent Mayor Otim Geoffrey of the Democratic Party (DP) who came second with 5,403 votes.

Moses Abonga, the former LCIII chairperson for Laroo division and the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) candidate came last with 1,005 votes.

In the Bar-dege/Layibi division mayoral race, Patrick Okello Cukari (NRM) won the election after garnering 5,489 votes.

Fred Ngom-okwe (DP) came second after garnering 1,756 votes, Yasinto Oyat (Independent) is third after collecting 1,281 votes while David Onencan (Independent) came last with 866 votes.

Okello Cukari replaces Oola Patrick Lumumba who opted not to seek re-election.

On Tuesday the Electoral Commission Spokesman Julius Mucunguzi says they have noted the decline in in the turnup levels, and will give a report after the election cycle.

Nationally, registered voters in 56 municipalities and city divisions elected local chairpersons (commonly called mayors) and councillors in elections organized under the Local Governments Act and the Electoral Commission Act.
