The 2024 Multidimensional Poverty survey conducted by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics-UBOS placed Amuru as the poorest district in Acholi sub region. The multidimensional poverty index 2024 report was released on March 26, 2026 in Kampala.
The multidimensional poverty index ranked Amuru district as the poorest with a poverty index of 0.414, followed by Nwoya district 0.375 and Gulu district with a poverty index of 0.351.
Agago district ranked 4th with a poverty index of 0.331 followed by Pader district with 0.325, Omoro district at 0.320, Lamwo 0.319 and Kitgum at 0.314.
Gulu City ranked the lowest with 0.164 implying it is the richest in Acholi sub region.
At the national ranking, placed Karamoja sub region as the poorest sub region at 56% followed by West Nile at 39%, Sebei at 33%, Acholi at 33.2%, Rwenzori at 32.2%, Tooro at 31%, Bukedi at 30.9%, and Bunyoro at 30.1%.
The report identifies key drivers of poverty, including health-related challenges, limited access to clean and safe water, unemployment, poor sanitation, and inadequate housing conditions, among others.
