Amuru District Taskforce has recommended immediate ban on night food vending in Elegu Border Town as the district grapples with an outbreak of cholera disease.

The disease has so far claimed five lives and infected over 200 people since early this month.

During the task force meeting on Monday, the district leadership came up with a raft of recommendations aimed at curbing the transmission of cholera.

Among them included the ban on roadside vending of food, arrest of defiant drug shop owners treating cholera patients, enforcement of the ban on open defecation, and use of shallow wells.

On Monday the task force also unveiled a 913.2 million shillings cholera response budget.

Dr Alfred Okello, the Amuru District Health Officer, said poor handling of food and poor hygiene are some of the contributing factors for the surge in cases.

Cholera is an infectious disease typically causing severe diarrhea, vomiting and muscle cramps, which spreads easily under insufficient sanitation conditions.

According to the World Health Organization, Cholera remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.
