Dr. Langoya of Lacor Hospital Wins Award

By Omony Denis

Dr. Dan Oriba Langoya of St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor has been recognized by the Uganda Medical Association as the Young Doctor of the Year for his transformative work in managing Acute Kidney Injury in northern Uganda.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a sudden and sometimes temporary loss of kidney function, where the kidneys are unable to properly filter waste from the blood.

Dr. Oriba, who graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery from Makerere University in 2017, currently serves as the head of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Internal Medicine.

The award honors medical professionals whose contributions have significant impact through research, mentorship, teaching, or clinical innovation.

Dr. Oriba spearheaded a local initiative to manage Acute Kidney Injury through local interventions, helping more than 107 patients recover.

This is second time Dr Oriba is winning a similar award. In 2023, the Uganda Kidney Foundation honored him with a Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the treatment of Acute Kidney Injury in the region.

Acute Kidney Injury remains the most common kidney disease among children in Uganda, with a prevalence of 13.5% among hospitalized children.
