At least five staff of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital are in police custody at Gulu city central police station following the mysterious disappearance of the hospital vehicle, an incident that has put to question the security of the hospital assets.
It’s alleged that the Toyota Land Cruiser hard body Reg. No. UBE 639F donated by USAID to the hospital in 2022 went missing on the night of Feb 12th 2026.
The five suspects, whose names have been withheld for purposes of investigation, include two drivers and three hospital security officers “askaris”.
The suspects were allegedly on duty when the vehicle mysteriously went missing from the hospital compound.
Walter Uryek Wun, the Principal Hospital Administrator, confirmed the arrest of the five suspects adding that the hospital administrators suspect that the theft of the vehicle was planned by a staff at the hospital.
The case was reported to Gulu city central police station under SD Ref: 146/12/02/2026.
This is not the first time that a vehicle allocated to a referral hospital has disappeared mysteriously and staff are implicated
In 2021 two vehicles including an ambulance were stolen from Arua Regional Referral Hospital and later sold to neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo where they were later recovered.
Later, five people including a Dental Assistant, a security guard at the hospital, a driver of the Hospital, a driver attached to the Office of the Prime Minister and were arrested and they confessed to selling the ambulance to DRC.
