Editorial

Unlike in the past where money was paid through bank accounts, under the new “cattle rehabilitation program,” beneficiaries of the cattle compensation in Northern Uganda will be paid through mobile money.

In December last year, cabinet approved UGX 80Bn to compensate people from Acholi, Lango and Teso sub regions who lost their livestock during the LRA insurgency.

In the cabinet decision, every household in Acoli, Lango, and Teso will be given an equivalent in money terms of 5 cow each cow valued at one million shillings, so every household in Northern Uganda will receive 5 million shillings.

According to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, Lango sub region has approximately 575,559 households, 489,000 in Teso and 211,000 in Acoli, with each expected to receive at least 5 million shillings.

Kenneth Omona Olusegun, the Minister of State for Northern Uganda Rehabilitation explained that government recognizes the challenges encountered and costs involved in bank operations, prompting them to consider mobile money transaction.

According to Omona, the activity which is expected to run for 5 years will begin very soon.
