The Gulu District Local Council has dismissed claims that it is frustrating the redevelopment of Pece War Memorial Stadium, located in Pece Laroo Division in Gulu city, clarifying that earlier delays were a result of inadequate information from the National Council of Sports, (NCS) rather than resistance to the project.
Speaking at a meeting organized by the Chief Administrative Officer of Gulu District Local Government with officials from the NCS held on Tuesday at the Gulu District Council Hall, the Gulu District Council Speaker, Phoebe Ayoo said the council has now unanimously agreed to hand over Pece War Memorial Stadium to the NCS to allow redevelopment works to proceed.
Addressing the same meeting, Ambrose Tashobya, the Chairperson of the National Council of Sports, who is also Chairperson Infrastructure Management Subcommittee of AFCON 2027 emphasized the urgency of the project, noting that time is critical if Uganda is to meet CAF requirements ahead of AFCON 2027.
Uganda, alongside Kenya and Tanzania, is set to jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, and the government has identified key sports facilities across the country for upgrade to meet international standards.
Pece Stadium and Gulu university grounds in Gulu city are among the facilities earmarked to support training and football-related activities during the tournament.
