Most health facilities in Acholi sub region lack Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) friendly delivery beds, forcing a number of them to deliver from home.

The Gulu Women with Disabilities Union (GUWODU), in its report indicates that the vice has forced more than 100 expectant mothers with disabilities to give birth from home last year.

Patricia Adong, Human Rights and Advocacy Focal Point Person at Gulu Women with disabilities Union (GUWODU), says other factors include long distance, the hard economic situation, stigma and attitudes of midwives toward expectant mothers with disabilities.

Walter Uryek Wun, the Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Principal Hospital Administrator admits that a number of government health facilities in the region lack PWD friendly delivery beds with the exception of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital

Research suggests that planned home births are associated with a higher risk of infant death, seizures and nervous system disorders than planned hospital births.
