Muslims in Gulu City and other surrendering areas have been called upon to strengthen unity, uphold peace, and follow health guidelines as they mark Eid al-Adhuha.
The message was delivered on Wednesday during Eid celebrations by Onduga Mahfuz Musa, the acting deputy District Khadi of Acholi Muslim District, on behalf of Sheikh Muzamil Ismiael, the District Kadhi, Acholi Muslim District.
The congregation was reminded that Eid al-Adhuha represents sacrifice, obedience, and unity, as demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail with Muslims urged to avoid hatred, division, tribalism, and conflicts that undermine peaceful coexistence.
The message also emphasized the importance of educating children, supporting mosque development, engaging in lawful work, and promoting economic growth within the community stating that a strong Muslim community is built on knowledge, hard work, discipline, and cooperation.
On health, the acting Khadi encouraged Muslims to remain vigilant against the current Ebola threat and to follow all guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health. He stressed the need to maintain cleanliness, wash hands regularly, avoid unnecessary contact when sick, and report suspected cases early.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is one of the holiest celebrations in Islam. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah before God provided a ram as a substitute.
The celebration is marked by the slaughtering of animals such as cows, goats, sheep, and camels, with the meat shared among family members, neighbours, and especially poor and vulnerable households.
