Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Eyes Upgrade

By Norbert Mao

Dr. Peter Mukobi, the Director of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital in Gulu City has revealed that between 15 and 20 percent of patients who seek medical care and are treated at the facility are refugees.

Dr. Mukobi made the announcement while speaking during the 5th Regional Health Assembly for Acholi sub region that was held in Gulu City from August 26th to 28th.

Uganda currently hosts more than 1.9 million refugees and asylum seekers, making it the largest refugee-hosting country in Africa, and majorly come from the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, fleeing conflict and instability in their home countries, placing increased pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

The hospital’s director emphasized management’s long-term vision of transforming the facility into a national referral hospital.

Dr. Mukobi said such an upgrade would allow it to provide more specialized care and strengthen its role as a center of excellence in healthcare delivery.

Transition of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital to a national referral hospital would require expanded infrastructure, additional staffing, and enhanced medical equipment.

If realized, the upgrade could significantly improve health outcomes across northern Uganda and further support the country’s commitment to serving refugees and host communities alike
