Police in Gulu city have arrested a security guard on allegation of killing his girlfriend over a phone call.
Albert Okonye (37) attached to 7 Guidance Security Company was arrested on Wednesday at around 11pm from his work station at Shine petrol station in Layibi along Gulu-Kampala highway after killing his girl friend.
It’s alleged that Okonye hit the head of his girlfriend Barbra Faith Akello with the gun bat several times killing her instantly.
Police say the incident occurred at around 11:00 pm at Shine Petrol Station in Layibi Centre, where the suspect was on duty.
According to a statement by David Ongom Mudong, the victim had visited the suspect at his workplace when a disagreement broke out.
Preliminary findings indicate that the confrontation began after the suspect allegedly suspected the deceased of being involved with another man, following a phone call she received.
Police say Okonye then used the butt of his gun to repeatedly strike the victim on the head, inflicting fatal injuries.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa West Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident saying the suspect has been arrested and is being detained at Gulu Central Police station pending investigation.
Mudong said the deceased body has been conveyed to Gulu regional referral hospital for postmortem.
The incident comes barely a week after another domestic violence case in which a police officer, Harriet Akera, was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend, Brian Akera Apire, who remains in custody at Gulu Central Police Station. Police figures show that homicide remains a major concern nationally.
According to Police Annual crime report 2025, a total of 1,326 cases of murder as a result of assault were recorded compared to 1,339 in 2024.
