More than 1,000 families have been displaced after flash floods hit Elegu border Town in Amuru district on Sunday night after River Unyama burst its banks following the continued torrential rainfall being experienced in the region.

The most affected areas include Kaladima, Lorikwo East, Bibia Village and parts of Lorikwo West.

The flash floods also submerged several crop gardens in the affected areas.

Odong Stephen Latek, the Amuru Resident District Commissioner, said the district disaster management committee is working closely with Uganda Red Cross to evacuate the affected persons to safer areas and support them with essential items.

Heavy rainfalls over the years have resulted in repeated floods in Elegu Town Council leaving trails of destruction, injuries, and death of locals.

The floods have reportedly killed 10 people and destroyed tonnes of merchandise over the last five years.
