The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced that Karuma and Ayago bridges along the Kampala-Gulu highway will reopen to all traffic on Monday.
The bridges were closed for repairs, and the reopening follows the successful installation and curing of expansion joints.
The 61-year-old Karuma Bridge was fully closed in September 2024 to allow for major repairs that lasted three months.
It was temporarily reopened in December 2024 to light vehicles to ease movement during the festive season.
In March 2025, the government instituted another three-week closure of Karuma Bridge to continue with the remaining works, which also included repairs on the Ayago Bridge in Anaka sub-county along the Karuma–Pakwach Highway.
Although the reopening was initially slated for April 17, 2025, a letter published on the Ministry’s official X platform on April 12 confirmed the bridges would now reopen earlier than scheduled, following the successful installation and curing of bridge joints.
