Kitgum District Local Government has secured a 20 acre piece of land in Labongo Amida West sub county for the construction of a school and a health facility under the Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project Phase II, a World Bank-backed regional initiative managed under the Office of the Prime Minister to improve basic social services, expand economic livelihoods, and restore environments in refugee-hosting districts and host communities.
The development comes shortly after the government announced plans to establish a new refugee settlement in Kitgum District.
The proposed settlement will occupy 449 acres of land in Kampala Anyuka Village, Okidi Parish, Labongo Amida West Sub-county.
The new settlement is expected to ease congestion in existing refugee camps, promote self-reliance through agriculture, and improve local infrastructure and service delivery.
Tolit Tonny Blair, the Kitgum District LCV Chairperson, confirmed the development, noting that the land has already been registered under freehold ownership, and the preliminary survey has been completed.
