Turn-up of residents was low on the first day of the LC1 voter register update exercise that began on Monday morning across the country with officials attributing the low turnout to inadequate public awareness.

The registration exercise will run until Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily at designated registration centres in all 71,214 villages across the country, ahead of the Local Council I and Women Council elections scheduled for July 28, 2026.

The poor turnout has prompted both incumbent LC1 leaders and aspiring candidates to intensify mobilisation efforts by moving door-to-door and placing public announcements encouraging residents to register.

During the registration, residents are required to present their National Identity Cards, after which their personal details, including names and National Identification Numbers (NIN), are captured in the village.

Under this programme, residents aged 18 years and above who wish to participate in the elections are to register between July 6 and July 10.

The Village General Register and Village Women’s Register will then be displayed for public verification from July 13 to July 14.

According to the Electoral Commission spokesperson, Julius Mucunguzi, only residents who register during this exercise will be eligible to vote or contest for the position of LC1 Chairperson, or participate as members of the Women Councils and Committees.
