President Yoweri Museveni has hailed former Archbishop Janani Luwum as a torchbearer of truth and liberty during the 48th commemoration of St. Janani Luwum’s Day at Wigweng in Mucwini West Sub-county, Kitgum District.

In a speech delivered by Prime Minister Robinah Nabanja, Museveni described Archbishop Luwum as a courageous leader who stood for truth and fought against injustice, even at the cost of his life.

He emphasized that Luwum’s legacy continues to inspire Ugandans to champion freedom, justice, and human rights.

Museveni noted that the late Janani Luwum will be remembered not just for his spiritual leadership but also for his unwavering commitment to action.

Despite facing humiliation and brutal persecution, he remained determined to see change.

The Most Rev. Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, also addressed the gathering, urging politicians to avoid divisive politics as the country approaches the 2026 general elections.

St. Janani Luwum’s Day is a national holiday in Uganda, established by President Museveni in 2015.   It is marked with prayers, hymns, and reflections on the life and legacy of Archbishop Luwum, who was martyred on February 16, 1977, during President Idi Amin’s regime.
