Museveni Warns Students Against Election Violence 2026 Elections

M7 meets University Students leaders on 7th January 2026

President Yoweri Museveni has cautioned students against engaging in violence as Uganda approaches the general elections, warning that unrest only destroys public assets built through collective sacrifice.

Addressing leaders of the Inter-University Guild Leaders Network in Kampala, the President emphasised that public infrastructure is funded by taxpayers and belongs to all citizens, making its destruction through riots both irresponsible and self-defeating.

He urged student leaders to ground their actions in clear principles, discipline, and proper timing, stressing that leadership demands thoughtful decision-making rather than emotional reactions.

Museveni likened violence to surgery, explaining that it should only be considered when all other options have failed and, even then, must be precise and purposeful rather than random.

The student delegation reaffirmed its dedication to promoting peace and stability, particularly within universities and other tertiary institutions, noting that they had already been actively involved in initiatives aligned with this goal.

The meeting brought together Guild Presidents from several institutions, including Makerere University, Gulu University, Uganda Christian University, Kyambogo University, Rubirizi Institute, Ankole University, Makerere University Business School, and Medcare Health Professionals, among others.
