The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) had been in Acholi sub-region for two days to identify and address challenges faced by PWDs.
The camp which commenced on Monday at Acholi Inn Hotel in Gulu city brought together disability council leaders, Community Development Officers, and Disability Focal Point Persons.
The participants discussed key issues affecting PWDs, including limited access to healthcare services, lack of assistive devices, unemployment, stigma, and barriers to education.
The team also sensitized disability councils on their roles and responsibilities to ensure that the rights of PWDs are protected while exploring ways to lobby for more support.
Justine Burisadi, the Vice Chairperson National Council for PWDs, said the camp is an initiative aimed at extending services closer to PWDs. She stressed that many PWDs in rural areas continue to struggle silently due to poverty, discrimination, and inadequate support systems.
Robert Ssewagudde, Member of Parliament-elect representing PWDs, said the camp will help gather firsthand information on the challenges faced by PWDs to inform decision making noting that more needs to be done to improve the lives of persons with disabilities across the region.
Jolly John Paul Nyeko, a council member representing the Acholi sub-region, welcomed the initiative, saying it will help bridge the gap between policymakers and communities in addressing disability issues.
