The National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) is set to embark on a review of the primary curriculum.

Dr. Grace Baguma, the Director of NCDC, speaking at the launch of the 2nd International Conference on Curriculum Development at Kyambogo, said that the review aims to align the primary curriculum with that of the lower secondary level.

This is intended to ensure a smooth transition from primary to lower secondary, upper secondary, and eventually to tertiary institutions.

She noted that the current primary curriculum is overloaded with content, and the review will focus on making it more effective and beneficial to learners at the primary level.

The NCDC is adopting an approach aimed at developing well-rounded, educated individuals who are ready to meet the demands of the evolving labour market.

Dr. Baguma further stated that the new curriculum will emphasise character development, values, and the empowerment of learners to handle emerging issues and trends, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).

She added that the conference will also address the integration of traditional knowledge, much of which has been shelved into the curriculum as a means of responding to modern challenges. NCDC was established in 1973 with the mandate of developing and reviewing curricula and instructional materials for pre-primary, primary, secondary, and some tertiary institutions.
