There was massive turnout of people at the Nwoya district headquarters in Anaka Town Council today as the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) rolled out the mass enrollment and renewal of National Identity cards.
NIRA plans to renew 15.8 million national ID cards across the country that are set to expire by June 2025. In addition, it aims to register 17.2 million new applicants, including children under the age of 17 and individuals who missed previous registration exercises.
The six months entire mass enrollment and ID renewal exercise is projected to cost taxpayers approximately 666.8 billion shillings.
While officially launching the exercise, Omara Christopher, the Nwoya Resident District Commissioner asked local leaders to mobilize the masses for the exercise.
Peter Mpungu Mukama, the NIRA District Registration Officer for Nwoya, said their current priority is individuals renewing their national IDs.
