Nwoya District health department has recorded 84, 767 cases of malaria in the last 10 months according to a report from the district health department.
The district recorded the cases from January to October this year.
According to the report, Koch Goma Sub-county registered the highest number at 14,494 cases with a prevalence rate of 59% significantly above the district average of 38%. Anaka Town Council recorded the lowest number of cases at 11,601, representing 21% of the total health facility visits.
Sam Obonyo, the Malaria Focal Person for Nwoya, attributes the spike in cases to poor preventive measures including use of mosquito nets among others.
The 5th Acholi Region Annual Integrated Performance Review for the Financial Year 2024/25 has revealed Malaria as the leading cause of deaths in Acholi sub region, underscoring persistent public health challenges.
According to the newly released data, Malaria accounted for 302 deaths, representing 19% of all recorded deaths during the year.
According to a 2020 report by the Ministry of Health, the government spent UGX 370 billion shillings on malaria treatment nationwide.
