Detectives investigating the theft of a vehicle belonging to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital are yet to recover the vehicle and the proceed from the sale of the vehicle.
Paul Apie, an employee of the USAID Uganda Health Activity (USAID-UHA) confessed to stealing and selling the vehicle for 45 million shillings.
The vehicle Reg. No UBE 639F Toyota Land Cruiser hard body donated by USAID went missing on Feb, 12, 2026 from the hospital compound.
Apie claims UGX 24M was stolen from him while in Kampala and he and his wife had used the remaining balance of UGX 21M.
The suspect and the hospital head of drivers, Pius Ocan, are expected to appear in court next week.
Walter Uryek Wun, the Hospital Principal Administrator, said the head of driver was arrested after the vehicle tracking device had been found nonfunctional.
Last week, a team of police criminal investigation officers were funded to travel to Karamoja and Kenya in search of the vehicle.
According to the source, the suspect allegedly received 300,000 shillings for fuel and filled the vehicle at a petrol station in Unyama trading Centre in Laroo-Pece Division in Gulu City before driving through Kitgum District to Karenga District.
The source claims the suspect arrived in Karenga at around 4am. on February 11, where a buyer and coordinators were reportedly waiting.
He allegedly handed over the vehicle after which the buyer drove it into Kenya.
