A14-year-old girl in Nwoya district, whose cancerous condition recently went viral on social media attracting public sympathy, has lost the battle.

Ajok Fiona, a former pupil at Agung Primary School in Anaka sub-county, died On Wednesday from home surrounded by close relatives.

Ajok, a resident of Todora village, Anaka sub-county, had been bedridden since early 2022 when she was diagnosed with bone cancer in her left thigh.

Ajok’s plight was first shared on social media on February 21, 2023 by Nwoya district chairperson, Emmanuel Orach who appealed for help from the public. At least 1 million shillings was raised for her treatment.

She was then admitted at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital before being referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for better management.

However her condition deteriorated when the family was still looking for money to travel to Mulago National Referral Hospital and she breathed her last on Wednesday.

According to the World Health Organization, Uganda had 32,617 of cancer cases and 21,829 death registered in 2018.
