At least six pregnant girls are sitting the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations in Kitgum District, according to a report from the District Education Department.
Out of the six candidates; four are sitting their examinations at Lamiyo Seed Secondary School in Lamiyo Sub County, while the other two are registered at Kitgum Matidi Seed Secondary School in Kitgum Matidi Sub County.
The six candidates are part of the 650 students registered to sit the UCE examinations in the district.
Joyce Alwoch, the Kitgum District Local Government Secretary for Education and Sports, confirmed the report to Mega FM, commending the girls for overcoming the challenges to sit the National examinations.
Alwoch, however, said the district had expected to have 864 candidates to sit the UCE exams this year but 214 students dropped out before the registration.
She attributed the dropout rate to several factors, including negative parental attitudes towards education, risky lifestyles and inadequate parental support, among other challenges.
