Two South Sudanese refugees were on Sunday morning burnt to death in a house fire incident at Palabek Refugee Settlement Camp in Lamwo district.
The deceased have been identified as Maruoth Lam Mawich (4) and Nyakuach Kuiya, (3), all nuer by tribe.
The fire was allegedly started by one Nyabiey Mawich who was lighting fire from inside her grass thatched hut when it accidently caught fire and spread to other houses including the one where the deceased were and burnt them to death. In total, five grass thatched huts were burnt down.
Joe Oloya, the Acting Aswa East Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident saying the bodies of the deceased were delivered to Kitgum General Hospital for postmortem.
According to the 2024 police annual crime report, a total of 1,280 cases of fire has been registered across the country. Of the 1,280 cases, 100 cases has been attributed to poor cooking habits.
