Uganda, in its capacity as chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), has condemned what it described as an act of aggression by the United States against Venezuela, following military action that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Delivering a statement to the United Nations Security Council on behalf of NAM, Uganda accused the United States of carrying out armed attacks on both civilian and military locations in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, as well as in other cities across the country. The bloc said the actions constituted a grave breach of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

According to the statement, read by Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare, the attacks amounted to an act of war that threatens regional and international peace and security, while endangering the lives of Venezuelan citizens. NAM argued that such actions undermine the core principles of sovereignty, equality among states, and peaceful coexistence.

The Non-Aligned Movement called for an immediate end to all hostilities against Venezuela and demanded full respect for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, and right to self-determination. It also urged that those responsible for the alleged acts of aggression be held accountable under international law.

In its statement, NAM further emphasised the inviolability of the immunities accorded to Heads of State and government, describing them as a cornerstone of international relations and multilateralism. The bloc warned that selectively disregarding these immunities risks destabilising global relations and weakening the international legal order.

The condemnation follows reports that, on Saturday morning, US forces launched an attack on Venezuela that resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people, including civilians and military personnel.

President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were reportedly arrested during the operation and airlifted to the United States, where they were charged with narcoterrorism in a New York court. US President Donald Trump has previously accused Maduro of facilitating illegal drug shipments to the United States.

He has also publicly stated that Washington is interested in managing Venezuela’s vast oil resources and indicated that the US intends to oversee the country’s administration until what it considers acceptable leadership is in place.
