Police in Apac district are holding a26-year-old Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier for allegedly shooting a civilian to death over a woman.
Private Amali Jacob, attached to 101 battalion in Lacekocot, Pader District was arrested on Wednesday shortly after killing Okullo Haggai (25) in Kwoyo village, Chegere sub county in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Police recovered seven spent cartridges from the crime scene and transported the deceased’s body to Apac Hospital for a postmortem examination.
The deceased is a resident of Atek village in Adeni parish, Chegere sub-county.
It’s alleged that on Tuesday, the suspect (Amali Jacob) escaped from his workplace and proceeded home in Kwoyo ‘A’ village.
However, on reaching home, he went with his friends to a drinking joint at Kidilani trading centre. Later in the night, the suspect and deceased picked a fight over a lady identified as Auma Winnie.
In a state of rage, the suspect dashed home, picked his gun, returned to the drinking joint and shoot Okullu to death.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident saying the suspect at his father’s residence, where additional weapons were recovered. Security team recovered an AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine hidden in a swamp near the scene, as well as a rusty SMG gun and a stick grenade.
Three civilians—Ibende, Olira, and Denis Oyom alias Ebende were also arrested in connection with the incident and are in custody at Apac Central Police Station.
