The Uganda People’s Defence Forces-UPDF says it is to recruit youth in the districts of the Rwenzori region for deployment as Local Defence Units (LDUs).
The deployment of the LDUs is part of the response to the threat by the ADF and other insurgents in the region.
Col. Henry Obo, deputy director of defence public information, says the recruitment exercise will run from November 10th to November 13th, targeting the districts of Kabarole, Kamwenge, Ntoroko, Bunyangabu, Kasese, and Bundibugyo. One hundred recruits will be drawn from each of the districts.
Obo said the recruitment is being done in consideration of the security threats in the region.
The candidate will be expected to present a handwritten application endorsed by the LC 1 chairperson up to LCIII, possess original ID or NIN, be a resident in that district, aged 18 to 25 years, and be physically fit.
Obo called upon the young people to come up and take the opportunity so that they are able to contribute to the peace and stability of the region and the country as a whole.
On Saturday, armed suspects attacked police and military installations across Bundibugyo, Kasese, and Fort Portal City, leaving communities tense and heightening concerns about regional security.
UPDF confirmed the deaths of 41 assailants and the capture of over 90 others following a violent confrontation with armed groups.
