Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has died after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment in India. He was 80.
According to Indian police and local media reports, Odinga collapsed on Wednesday morning during a walk at an Ayurvedic treatment facility in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam District, Kerala State.
Odinga arrived in Koothattukulam six days ago, accompanied by his daughter, close family members and a personal doctor.
He has been following a routine of morning walks and treatment sessions at the hospital.
A spokesperson for the Ayurvedic Eye Hospital said Odinga was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 9:52 a.m. local time. His body is currently kept at the Deva Matha Hospital.
Odinga, a long-time opposition leader and one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, served as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013 under a power-sharing agreement following the country’s disputed 2007 elections.
Odinga was also a long-time opposition leader and head of the Orange Democratic Movement.
He contested and lost several presidential elections and remained a prominent political figure in Kenya.
