The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has confirmed coordinated armed attacks on security posts and personnel across Bundibugyo, Kasese, and Fort Portal districts.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs on Saturday, the attacks occurred early on November 1, when armed groups wielding submachine guns and machetes targeted police and UPDF positions.
UPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye said the assailants struck police posts in Kasese and Bundibugyo, including Malindi and Kakuka in Bundibugyo, and Canon Apollo School in Fort Portal City.
Mega Fm has obtained a police incident report identifying the mastermind as Asuman Muganzi Mikirani of Kakukha II Village, Sindila Subcounty.
The first attack occurred at the Malindi military detachment at about 3:00 a.m. Private Kwesiga Samuel (RA 306897) was killed after being shot and hacked on the head. Private Twongyirwe Erias (RA 307056) sustained a broken leg, and a civilian woman, Nayebare Annitah, originally from Rukungiri, was also killed.
At Kakukha, located approximately three kilometers from Malindi, security forces put two attackers out of action. One of them was identified by locals as Biteyo Herizon, a Congolese national residing in Ndugutu Butama, Bundibugyo.
The assailants burned 26 of 31 grass-thatched houses, destroyed a PK and an AK-47, and stole a 12.5mm weapon.
Fifteen attackers were captured alive, including one female and two juveniles aged 12 and 14.
Among the captives are Baluku Kakoko, 28, Edison Birere, 36, Isaac Maate, 42, Dauda Agaba, 31, and two minors. Others include residents from Bundibugyo, Kasese, and Kampala.
Nine are detained at Bundibugyo Central Police Station, while six were taken to Muhoti Mountain Division headquarters.
Meanwhile, the UPDF urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police or military post.
Additional security deployments have been made to reinforce protection and prevent further incidents in the affected districts.
